ACLU lawyer Chase Strangio and activist, writer, and media strategist Raquel Willis joined The Nation for an intimate conversation exploring the recent spate of anti-trans legislation targeting children that is sweeping the country, why visibility is not enough, and how to fight back against the discriminatory legislation. Stangio and Willis co-wrote an article recently for The Nation on the occasion of Trans Week of Visibility and Action.
“I do an exercise with people,” Strangio said. “I often ask people to say, well, how do you identify your gender? And then say, well, how do you know? How do you know that’s your gender? And that’s a question trans people are asked all the time. We’re never believed. But the reality is that for many of us, the answers are deeply unsatisfying. We have siblings of the same gender. We like certain things. And it’s all facile in a way. And it sort of exposes to us the fragility of the system as a whole, which is what I think everyone is so afraid of.”
