Nation editor Katrina vanden Heuvel appeared on Hardball on MSNBC hours before President Barack Obama’s speech to Americans on Libya, calling for a "plausible exit strategy." Vanden Heuvel argues that Obama should “find a way out of Libya” and support the surge in Arab democratic movements that has risen up in the past months.

Pat Buchanan says that George W. Bush tried elections in Egypt, Lebanon and the West Bank and the US saw Hamas, Hezbollah and the Muslim Brotherhood win, and asks whether Americans could really face the results of democratic elections in Saudi Arabia or Bahrain. Vanden Heuvel responds: "I believe in the power of democracy from below, not through bullets, and not the way George W. brought it to Iraq.”

“This is a global problem,” says vanden Heuvel, that needs more than a military solution.
