If you were waiting for a discussion on welfare during last night’s domestic policy debate, you turned off the TV disappointed. Despite a call to Jim Lehrer to engage both candidates in a substantive conversation on poverty, welfare wasn’t mentioned once in the ninety-minute back-and-forth. In an interview on the Matthew Filopowicz Show last weekend, Nation blogger Greg Kaufmann pointed out some key numbers both candidates have missed: like the fact that for every 100 families with children in poverty, just twenty-seven receive cash assistance.
