A tribute to a top human rights activist murdered in the troubled Russian republic of Chechnya.

July 18, 2009

Human Rights Watch pays tribute to the slain Russian human rights activist Natalya Estemirova. Estemirova, who worked for a prominent Russian human rights group Memorial and wrote about the allegedly murdered investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya for The Nation, was abducted in broad daylight in Chechnya and soon after found dead in the neighboring province of Ingushetia. Estemirova was a rare bird in Russia: documenting human rights abuses in Chechnya, she was in opposition to the country’s young leader Ramzan Kadyrov. With another truth seeker silenced in Russia, who is next?
