Despite what McCain thinks, the USÂ military doesn't always do things according to official policy. Stephen Colbert knows that, and so does Jeremy Scahill.
Press RoomThis week on The Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert brought up the case of Major Mike Almy, a Vietnam War veteran who was recently discharged from the military after officers read his private emails, found "proof of homosexuality," ordered an official investigation and forcibly escorted him off the base.
When confronted about the incident, Senator John McCain denied that it happened, stating repeatedly that investigating individual’s sexuality is "not the policy" in the military.
Colbert runs through an abbreviated history of sketchy things the US military has done that weren’t official policy, including a hat tip to Jeremy Scahill’s Nation article, "The Secret US War in Pakistan."
