For the past five years, Palestine has been bitterly divided between Fatah in the West Bank and their political rival, Hamas, in Gaza. Internal strife has made Palestine even more vulnerable to occupation, redefining Palestine as a weak, disconnected entity rather than a united people with shared political aspirations.
However, following a series of recent unity protests across the West Bank, Gaza and refugee camps, Hamas and Fatah have agreed to end the disastrous schism. In this Nation Conversation, Palestinian activist Mustafa Barghouti explains the significance of the political agreement as well as its accompanying swelling non-violent resistance movement.
