WikiLeaks revealed a Latin America dominated by American intervention and meddling.
Press Room
The WikiLeaks cables revealed extensive US involvement in Latin American affairs. From pressuring leaders to alienate Hugo Chávez, to learning what medications the Argentine president was taking, the US diplomatic posture has included spying and espionage. Still, over the past decade, they have encountered a revived and resilient left, which looks to forever rid Latin America of US entanglement. In this week’s special issue of The Nation, guest editor Peter Kornbluh highlights, with the help of leading Latin American journalists, the most spectacular revelations and repercussions of the Wikileaks cables. Speaking with Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!, Kornbluh outlines how the cables have forever altered the prestige of America abroad, given us the most contemporary and accurate picture of Latin American diplomatic relations to date, and revived investigative journalism in the region.
