The Overhead

John Ashbery

November 2, 2016

For two decades we kept Mum in the attic. Finally, one hubba hubba day in spring we let her out to walk in the park. She was never seen again.

The police refused to inspect the park, noting it as a family episode of no great consequence. Today I ask you in all squeamishness: Can we save a grand event? Did it really happen? Where are the DAR when you really need them?

John AshberyJohn Ashbery has published more than twenty volumes of poetry, including his Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror. A new collection of poems, Commotion of the Birds (Ecco), is out this year.
