Climate change history was made Sunday, September 21, when hundreds of thousands of people marched through the streets of New York to demand climate justice. They were joined by communities the world over, reaching nearly half a million people. The People’s Climate March came right before this week’s UN Climate Summit in New York, where UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon hopes to stoke global leaders’ political will for a meaningful legal agreement in 2015. Sunday’s march set a precedent not only in size, but also in the diversity of groups that participated. The Nation spoke to some of the activists from the climate justice movement, frontline communities, indigenous communities and labor unions who made up Sunday’s massive crowd.
