James Lawrence Powell, who holds a PhD in geochemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as well as several honorary degrees, served as acting president of Oberlin; as president of Franklin and Marshall College, Reed College, and the Franklin Institute Science Museum; and as president and director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. He was appointed by Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush to the National Science Board, on which he served for twelve years.
